The King & I

I have seen and been involved in many SIMADS shows but this was excellent and must be included in my short-list for the Region 4 award. Lynda Childs’ direction and control was excellent as was the orchestra under new musical director Carole Lewis. Performed in the Burgess Hall, the Palace set was placed in what I lovingly call ‘the fireplace’ and most of the other action took place on the apron. I cannot fault the singing, chorus movement, sound and lighting, all spot on. The two principals were first class. Anna (Caroline Jones) was brilliant – singing voice, personality and acting, all perfect. Phil Cox (King) complete with shaved head also top class. Tuptim (Sarah Henderson) and Lady Thiang (Moira Shirra) gave very confident and polished performances. Prince (Philip Bertioli) made good use of his singing voice particularly in the duet with Louis (James Quilligan). The costumes were excellent throughout and the ballet a delight to watch. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.
